However, in 2001, when physicians saw a lump on her back, they determined that she had melanoma, an aggressive type of skin cancer. Throughout her treatment, she kept her diagnosis a secret; however, after three years of remission, in 2004, she opened up about the experience. Shepherd's medical team revealed that she now has examinations every few months to ensure there are no signs of recurrence after a successful course of treatment. Thankfully, each scan revealed no issues.
